Shades of Blue is a powerhouse New England blues-rock ensemble featuring Grammy‐nominated guitarist Jon Butcher, powerhouse blues harp and vocals from Diane Blue, fiery guitar work by Chuck Farrell, groove‐driven drums from A.J. Vallee, and deep, soulful bass from John Rider. Blending searing guitar riffs, soulful harp, and tight, dynamic rhythms, the band delivers high-voltage performances rooted in rock, blues, and roots traditions, bringing decades of experience from the region’s top stages to every show. With a lineup of seasoned veterans and standout personalities, Shades of Blue is a commanding force in the contemporary blues scene.

Jon Butcher is a Grammy-nominated rock and blues guitarist, singer, and songwriter best known as the force behind The Jon Butcher Axis, a breakout act of the early-’80s Boston rock scene. His 1983 Polydor debut produced the MTV hit “Life Takes a Life,” followed by Along the Axis, which earned a Grammy nomination for “The Ritual” and the Billboard Hot 100 single “The Sounds of Your Voice.” Celebrated for his fiery, expressive guitar style, Butcher toured with The J. Geils Band, Rush, Def Leppard, Scorpions, and INXS. A New England Music Hall of Fame inductee, he continues to record, perform, and compose for film, television, and games.

Diane Blue is an acclaimed blues vocalist, harmonica virtuoso, songwriter, and bandleader known for her soulful voice and ferocious harp playing. A longtime featured performer and the first female member of Ronnie Earl & The Broadcasters, she appears on their recent celebrated albums and has co-written material with the band’s legendary guitarist. Diane’s solo work — including the charting Look for the Light — showcases her blend of traditional blues, soul, and R&B and earned her national recognition, including a Massachusetts Blues Challenge win and appearances at the International Blues Challenge and Blues Music Awards in Memphis. A multi-nominated and award-winning artist, she has toured the U.S. and
Europe, shared stages with greats like Luther “Guitar Jr.” Johnson, Irma Thomas, and the late Big Jack Johnson — who dubbed her a “monster on the harp” — and leads her own all-star band with charisma and commanding presence.
Chuck Farrell is a veteran guitarist, vocalist, and bandleader rooted in the New England rock and blues scene and best known as the driving force behind the Southern rock supergroup Once an Outlaw, which he formed by uniting seasoned players from The Outlaws, Marshall Tucker Band, and related acts. As a fixture of the regional circuit, Farrell has performed and collaborated with notable artists including James Montgomery, Jon Butcher, Diane Blue, Barry Goudreau, and members of Blood, Sweat & Tears and the Butch Trucks Band, showcasing his versatile guitar work and deep feel for blues-infused rock. His leadership in Once an Outlaw and long history with bands like The Peacheaters have made him a respected figure in both classic Southern rock and the broader New England blues/rock community.
A.J. Vallee is a dynamic drummer and percussionist celebrated for his high-energy, groove-driven playing and deep roots in the New England rock and blues circuit. He is a core rhythmic force in the Southern rock supergroup Once an Outlaw, and his versatile drumming has powered regional and national tours with acts including One Night of Queen, the Southern Rock All-Stars, James Montgomery, Jon Butcher, and the backing band for Starr Faithfull, with performances that blend rock, blues, and classic grooves. Known for his precision, feel, and commanding stage presence, Vallee is a go-to collaborator in the region’s vibrant live music community and a respected contributor to its ongoing legacy.
John Ryder is a veteran New England bassist and rock force best known for anchoring the 1980s Boston‐area new wave/rock band Face to Face, whose 1984 Top‐40 hit “10‐9‐8” broke into the Billboard charts during MTV’s heyday. A dynamic groove player with deep roots in blues and rock, Ryder went on to become a founding member of James Montgomery & Friends, earning regional acclaim and a Boston Music Award nomination, and has collaborated with numerous artists across the region’s blues and roots circuits. His seasoned bass lines and stage presence have made him a respected and enduring figure in the New England music scene.
The Fallout Shelter is an all ages performance venue welcoming worldwide, world class music in an intimate setting. Our studio audience attends to watch the creation and production of the music television series The Extended Play Sessions. The Fallout Shelter events are immersive experiences for both audience and performers alike...a live music experience like no other. We are fully ADA compliant and have wheelchair access. We have a wide selection of beer and wine for your adult beverage pleasures and each show comes with a free commemorative event poster. Our doors open at 6PM. Seating is General Admission. We recommend you arrive at the time the doors open.
